History & provenance: Eugene Hurtubise was a great man in many ways. He stood 6’4” & held the North American amateur wrestling title from 1904-7. He was also on the Peterborough champion rugby/football teams from 1900-1907, becoming captain in the later years. Hurtubise was employed at age 16, by Currie & Lavinger, to build the Peterborough lift lock. Because of his experience, he went on to supervise the sinking of the elevator shaft at Niagara Falls, all before the age of 25. Later, employed by General Electric, he invented a steam-powered well-digger to solve the lack of water at the company owned golf club. In 1942, Hurtubise invented the first effective fire suit, (now in the Coburg Museum) which was copied by US & Canadian armed forces. Also a community-spirited individual, he coached the Peterborough Liftlockers hockey team & lived most of his adult life in a large house on the northeast corner of Stewart & Sherbrooke Streets in Peterborough. He also carved as a hobby. The many positive impacts of his achievements are still felt today.
